So in my previous post, I said I had three favorite reasons for loving New Jersey living, so this is number two. A large number of restaurants have a BYOB policy. Yes, you can chose your favorite wine and bring it to the restaurant with you and there will be no corkage charge.
The policy started in the 1920s as a way for restaurants to escape the prohibition laws. The restaurants could pass on the blame to their customers for bringing in booze. It also benefits many restaurants as a New Jersey liquor license can be very expensive and they are hard to obtain. Liquor licenses must be purchased from a private owner, similar to purchasing real estate, and sometimes can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
In Westfield NJ’s downtown area, business is booming in the many local restaurants and, for the most part, the diners are not purchasing their wine off some expensive wine list – they just bring it along with them and save a lot of money. The mark up for a bottle of wine in a restaurant can be double or triple the cost of the local liquor store.
We went out in Westfield downtown last night and had a wonderful seafood meal at Limani on North Avenue. We took our favorite white wine with us and the proprietor even opened the wine and served us a glass while we waited for our table. If you’re looking for an excellent meal without the cost of the wine list, join us in Westfield at one of our many excellent restaurants.
