Happy Birthday America, it’s time to take the day off and celebrate. When it comes to Independence Day, we all think of barbecues, parades, picnics, hamburgers and, of course, fireworks. There are few among us who don’t revert to childhood again when we watch with amazement as firework displays fill the skies. Here in Union County, NJ, there are plenty of events to be enjoyed and a slew of firework displays to choose from. Here are a few of the events going on:
In Clark the celebrations are being held on Saturday the 7th, on the lawn of the Municiple Building. Festivities will include rides, food and a DJ from 4 to 8 pm. The fireworks will start at 9 pm across the street at the High School.
Cranford is offering a full day of activities, also on Saturday, and will start with canoe races at the Canoe Club at 8 am. For those of us who are energetic or merely want to burn off some of the calories they plan to consume later, there is The Firecracker Fun Run in Nomahegan Park at 9 am. During the rest of the day, you can enjoy different events such as a bicycle-decorating contest, an egg toss and races. Fireworks will begin at dusk in the park.
Mountainside is also scheduling it’s fireworks for Saturday at 8.30 pm at Our Lady of Lourdes Church.
Just to stretch things out, you can also enjoy fireworks on Friday in New Providence. They are scheduled to start downtown at 9.30 pm and South Avenue will be closed to traffic.
Summit‘s day will also start on Saturday with a flag raising ceremony at Soldiers’ Memorial Field followed by a decorated bicycle parade. There will also be rides, games, amusements and entertainment. The fireworks display is scheduled to start at 9.15 pm.
But for those of you who want only the best and to actually celebrate on Independence Day, take the trip into Manhattan- it takes under an hour. There you can gasp with wonder at the Macy’s Firework Display. It’s on the Hudson River again this year from 18th to 48th Streets, so don’t go to the wrong side of town! It also means there’s a great view from Northern New Jersey – in my opinion that’s the best view with Manhattan serving as a wonderful background.
