The heat of July brings with it thoughts of swimming pools, the shore, ice cream and the joy of fresh fruit and vegetables. Did you know it’s National Blueberry Month? Apart from being nature’s candy, blueberries are packed with antioxidants and offer many health benefits.
If you are looking for blueberries and other fresh, locally grown New Jersey produce, this is a great time to visit the Westfield Farmers Market which is one of the highlights of summer in downtown Westfield. The Farmers Market will run every Saturday from July 10th until October 30th. The location is the South Avenue Train Station parking lot and it is open from 8.30 a.m. until 2 p.m. There is plenty of parking, or you can just stroll into town and purchase “Jersey Fresh.”
Among the vendors this year are Donaldson Farms, Peaceful Valley and Skeba Farms, all offering a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables. For those who are fresh pasta fans, High Mountain Foods will have a selection of pastas and fresh mozzarella. There is also the Lithuanian Bakery with their European-style breads and treats which include babkas and deep-dish fruit pies.
The other fun thing to do is “pick your own.” New Jersey is “the Garden State” and there are plenty of farms where you can pick your own fresh ripe blueberries and many other fruits. Click the following link: for all the information on places to go.
For those Westfield residents who miss the Farmers Market, there’s always Alan’s Orchard on Quimby Street in downtown Westfield. They sell locally sustainably farmed and organic produce and are offering fresh blueberries right now. They promote themselves as being “a really great farmer’s market, with more convenient hours and a roof overhead.”
So treat yourself and make the most of summer.
