Middlesex County, NJ Real Estate Primer
Middlesex County is located in the center of New Jersey covering a total of 323 square miles. It is part of the New York Metropolitan area and its county seat is in New Brunswick.
The adjacent counties are Union County to the north, Monmouth County to the south-east, Mercer County to the south-west and Somerset County to the north-west. Middlesex County is governed by a seven-member Board of Chosen Freeholders.
Middlesex County has many state routes, US Routes, Interstates and toll highways. It hosts the southern end of Interstate 287 which then turns into NJ 440 which connects to the Outerbridge Crossing to Staten Island, New York. The Garden State Parkway passes through the eastern edge of the county. The New Jersey Turnpike carries Interstate 95 through the county.
Middlesex County is served by New Jersey Transit for rail service and both New Jersey Transit and Coach USA for bus service. The main rail lines that serve Middlesex are the Northeast Corridor line with a direct link into Manhattan. There are also the North Jersey Coast Line and Raritan Valley line. Intercity rail service is also provided by Amtrack.
Middlesex County colleges include: Middlesex County College in Edison. Rutgers in New Brunswick and Piscataway. University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ in New Brunswick and Princeton University Forrestal Campus in Plainsboro.
Major employers include Rutgers State University, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Merrill Lynch, Johnson & Johnson, Prudential Insurance Co, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, St. Peter’s University Hospital and Telcordia Technologies.
