Piscataway Real Estate

Piscataway was founded in 1666, and officially incorporated in 1798. The community, the fifth oldest municipality in New Jersey, has grown from ethnic territory, through a colonial period and is one of the links in the earliest settlement of the Atlantic seacoast that ultimately led to the formation of the United States. An application is pending with the State of NJ to create an historic district in the River Road area where there are 16 historic properties. The town covers 19.1 square miles and is 35 miles from New York City.

This diverse township has a fair percentage of apartments, townhouses and condominiums, although most house accommodations are single-family homes. Piscataway has six elementary, three middle and one high school, all of which were recently bolstered by the passage of a $53.1 million bond for school improvements.

Since the opening in 1960 of Interstate Highway 287, the township has proven a desirable location for suburban development. Many Fortune 500 companies are located in the township. These include Colgate Palmolive and Johnson & Johnson. The town’s prime location with its easy access to the New Jersey Turnpike, the Garden State Parkway, Routes 287, 78, 22, 27 and 18 make it especially attractive to commuters and corporations alike.

Rutgers University’s Busch campus and most of the Livingston campus fall within Piscataway, as does the football stadium. The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School are two of the facilities on the Busch campus.

Stretching along the banks of the Raritan River for about two miles, with a view of New Brunswick across the river, is Johnson Park, one of Middlesex County’s most popular parks. Established on land donated by Johnson & Johnson, the 470-acre park contains a small zoo and animal shelter, a wildflower sanctuary, as well as picnic areas, a trail, lakes, playgrounds and athletic facilities. There are also summer concerts in the park.

Despite the development, Piscataway has managed to maintain its friendly welcoming atmosphere, making it a wonderful place to live, work and play.
