Plainsboro Township is a community that has successfully made the transition from a rural farming enclave to a vibrant, diverse community of 21,000 people in an area of 11.8 square miles. The result of the Township’s careful planning is a balance of open space and development, with over 50% of the Township permanently preserved as open space.
Located in the southern section of Middlesex County, Plainsboro has close ties to Princeton and borders South Brunswick, Cranbury, Princeton and West Windsor. Exit 8A of the New Jersey Turnpike is only a couple of miles away and Route 1 and 130 pass through the township. The New Jersey Transit and Amtrak station in Princeton Junction is about 2-3 miles away, making Plainsboro an ideal place to live and commute from.
The Dutch migrated here during the mid 1600’s and English settlers soon joined them. In 1897, the Walker-Gordon Laboratory Company selected Plainsboro as the site for its innovative certified dairy farm. The daily operation of the farm ceased in 1971, about the same time that the community transformed from a small farm area into a more modern suburban area.
During the 1970’s, the community experienced unprecedented residential development. During the 1970’s and 80’s, the community’s largest property owner, Princeton University, marketed and developed its prestigious office park, the Princeton Forrestal Center. The township is also a center for major corporate office and research facilities, including Merrill Lynch, Bristol-Myers Squibb, GE Communications and Princeton University Plasma Research Physics Lab.
The West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional School District is a highly-renowned school system. 96% of the students go on to college, and the district currently has the fourth highest SAT scores in New Jersey. The school system is consistently ranked as one of the best in the State of New Jersey.
Plainsboro has varied housing opportunities that mark the area as a desirable home for a wide range of lifestyles. Housing includes single-family homes of various sizes, including a lot of large new construction, apartments, condos and town houses. There are historic, older homes and brand new neighborhoods. There are also many new shopping malls to support this growing population.
