Sayreville Real Estate
Sayreville is a borough located on the Raritan River, near Raritan Bay in Middlesex County, NJ. Sayreville has an area of 17.1 square miles and a population of over 40,000 people. It is a municipality in transition: although the borough remains an industrial town, the addition of many technology companies and a growing residential population has changed the landscape of this central New Jersey town.
Sayreville is the gateway to the Jersey Shore because the Raritan River is the line that is often considered to be the start of the shore region. Sayreville enjoys proximity to several major roadways: the Garden State Parkway, New Jersey Turnpike, Interstate 287, US Route 1, 9, 18 and Route 34 and 35. Three highway bridges span the Raritan River from the Sayreville side. The Edison Bridge on US 9 and the Driscoll Bridge on the Garden State Parkway connect with Woodbridge on the north. The Victory Bridge carried Route 35, connecting Sayreville with Perth Amboy.
Sayreville was first settled about 1775 and was incorporated in 1920. Originally known as Roundabout and then as Woods Landing, it was renamed in the 1870’s. Extensive clay deposits supported the brick industry from the early 1800’s until 1970. Until the 1870’s, Sayreville was an important river port. Manufacturers include paints, chemicals and processed food.
Although longtime industries have left, borough officials are hoping to create a high-tech hub. Sayreville has received a state cyber district grant to turn the former National Lead Industries site, now a brown field, into a haven for high-tech business.
Sayreville has many townhouse developments and new ones are being built. The borough has 17 parks, including Kennedy Park, a popular spot, as well as the woodsy Burke’s Park and River Road Park, which features a boat ramp. Those looking for lively nightlife can dance to the beat at various clubs along the Route 35 corridor.
