Bridgewater Real Estate
The township of Bridgewater in Somerset County covers 32.7 square miles and has a population of approximately 43,000 people. It stretches from the scenic hills of the Watchung Mountains to the north and the picturesque Raritan River to the south. While much of Bridgewater has relatively flat terrain, the northeast port of the township is very hilly because the First Ridge of the Watchung Mountains passes through the township
Although for many, the name Bridgewater brings to mind the Somerville traffic circle or the Bridgewater Commons Mall, this formerly agricultural area appears in some of the earliest records of land transactions in New Jersey. Washington’s troops spent the winter of 1778-79 here. In early years, Bridgewater was a farming town, until around the 1970s when its population began to grow, and is now a typical suburban town. Bridgewater is Somerset County’s second-most populous municipality, after Franklin Township.
Bridgewater comprises of six distinct neighborhoods and each offers a variety of lifestyles. Sunset Lake is known for its man made lake and older homes. Martinsville, known for being the township’s most affluent neighborhood, offers comfortable older homes and large new construction, all on lots of at least half an acre, with a village center perfect for shopping. The Milltown Road development, bordering Branchburg, is an area consisting of town houses, condos and single family homes built between 1980 and 2000.
Bridgewater is criss-crossed by several major highways, including Interstate 287, 78, US Route 22, 202-206 and 28. The Raritan Valley passenger rail line of NJ Transit also passes through Bridgewater. There are two stations in the Finderne area, one off Finderne Avenue and the other on the Old American Cyanamid property. This line takes commuters to Newark and New York City, as does the NJ Transit Bus Service.
Bridgewater is part of the Bridgewater-Raritan Regional School District. All of the schools are in Bridgewater except for Kennedy which is in Raritan Borough. This is an excellent school system which is divided between ten schools.
Bridgewater Township has good recreational facilities, including Duke Island Park, a scenic park running alongside the Raritan River. Green Knoll Golf course is the oldest course in the county system. North Branch Park offers picnic sites, softball fields, two horse show rings and a model airplane field. It is also known for numerous fishing holes.
